Sizemore Families - Between Two Fires
A Page of Links
In the near and distant past, I've conducted several research projects for clients descended from early Sizemore families. I've marvelled at the staunch rejection of these Indian families by the Dawes Commission. In a way, that rejection provides proof that the Sizemores and their near relations, including the Osbornes, Cornetts (Cornells) and Blevins, to name a few, were Indian people. Two volumes of signed and witnessed affidavits claiming Indian blood is a resounding testimony of it.
As much as some would like to say there are no Indians (no Cherokee) in Virginia and that all Indians today live on reservations, the rest having died out or been assimilated; the evidence indicates otherwise. The evidence shows the Sizemores as a tribe of Indian people successfully remaining together from the mid-1600's up through the early 20th Century in some areas of the United States.
The work of Dr. Donald Panther-Yates in genealogy and genetics has helped bolster the confidence of many Sizemore descendants, relatives and researchers in the basic claim set forth by all those hopeful Indian people who applied for the Eastern Cherokee payment (Guion Miller Roll) in the early years of the 1900's: that claim being that they, as a tribe of Cherokee Indians, had been displaced and suffered losses during the Indian Removals. I admire the results and efforts of all who have worked hard and dug deep in old records to discover the truth about these Indian families.
